During a rally for the Democratic ticket in Ohio on Monday, former Vice President Joe Biden said the violent events of the last week required leaders who could unite the country.
But this was a get-out-the-vote rally. So he criticized the Republican Party for favoring corporations over working people and seeking to gut Social Security and Medicare.
Biden urged people in attendance to reverse Republican control of Ohio government.
鈥淚 wrote a year ago, after the horrific events in Charlottesville, and I believe it just as strongly as I did then, that we鈥檙e in a battle for the soul of America,鈥 said Biden.
A couple hundred people 鈥 mostly college students 鈥 attended the rally at Youngstown State University. Biden smiled at the occasional call from the crowd for him to run for president in 2020.
He shared the stage with the top of the ticket, Richard Cordray and Betty Sutton, and praised both for working to protect the middle class.
鈥淭his is what kind of governance it鈥檚 going to be,鈥 said Biden. 鈥淲hat you see is what you get. Because Rich has character. And boy do we need more women and men in public life with character.鈥
A new Baldwin Wallace poll of likely voters shows the governor鈥檚 race between Cordray and Republican Mike DeWine is neck-and-neck.
