Columbus police have charged Carley Dials, 29, with involuntary manslaughter after police say her 3-year-old son accidentally shot himself this morning.
Police say a preliminary investigation determined the boy, Cartier Smith, got hold of an unsecured handgun inside a Southeast Side residence and unintentionally shot himself.
The child later died at a hospital.
Dials was taken to the Franklin County Jail.
A Columbus police dispatcher said someone called police just before 9 a.m. saying the boy shot himself in an apartment on Kodiak Drive.
The child died around 9:50 a.m. at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, according to officials.
