This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Volstead Act which banned the manufacture, sale and transportation of liquor in the U.S.
In the era that followed, organized crime increased, and often turned deadly. It also catapulted bosses like Al Capone into the national spotlight, and transformed the symbol of the American gangster into an icon.
In 1933, Prohibition was eventually repealed by the 21st Amendment.
